Admiral Hardy’s destroyers led the way out through the south entrance of the mole in Gibraltar Harbor. To the south of the entrance, his second carrier, Splendid, was sitting on the blocks in the Prince of Wales dry dock. He would miss her additional squadrons, but there was nothing that could be done to speed the repairs from the submarine torpedo that had damaged her starboard side. In a way, he was lucky he had managed to get her back to port.

High above, on the top of the rock, the 9.2 inch gun turret looked out on the strait. The admiral could see both the Moroccan coast and the Spanish town of Algeciras. Admiral Hardy was counting on the German spies in Algeciras to be watching every move he made. He was certain he would not be disappointed.

His light cruiser Leonidas cleared the mole, followed by Renown, Repulse, and Ark Royal; then they turned south in column. The sun was just beginning to set, and he knew he had timed his sailing perfectly. His destroyers formed an antisubmarine screen as the light was beginning to fade. Still visible, he turned his fleet east as if to embark on some mission against the Italians. Having him loose in “Mare Nostrum,” as Mussolini referred to the Mediterranean, should be enough to convince the timid Italian admirals to keep their battle fleet close to home. If they did not, Hardy had another surprise in store for the Italians.
